A research study titled "The Impact of the Arbaeen Pilgrimage on Developing the Virtues of Selflessness and Generosity" by researcher Azhar Jabbar Hadi from Najaf al-Ashraf examined the profound ethical and social dimensions of the Arbaeen pilgrimage. The study confirmed that this religious observance has effectively reinforced values of altruism and social solidarity among participants and pilgrims.
The study demonstrated that manifestations of generosity are clearly evident along the pilgrims' route through service stations (mawakib) that provide food, shelter, medical care, and various services to pilgrims free of charge. These behaviors represent a practical embodiment of the values of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), which are founded on sacrifice, giving, and benevolence.
The researcher noted that the Arbaeen pilgrimage has transformed into a spiritual and ethical season involving all segments of society—men and women, young and old—who work collectively to serve pilgrims. This contributes to creating an educational and moral environment that leaves a profound impact on individuals and society.
The study explored multiple aspects of how this spiritual journey shapes pilgrims' behavior and nurtures altruistic traits. It recommended the importance of academically documenting this unique phenomenon as a practical model of authentic Islamic values rooted in the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
